A Harmonic Major Scale on Guitar

The A harmonic major scale has the notes A, B, C#, D, E, F and G#. Take A major and lower the sixth degree by a half step, and you get that F natural, which adds a sad, slightly dreamy colour to a major sound.

The root is the open A string, and it appears again on the 5th fret of the low E string. The tonic chord is a plain Amaj7, while the fourth degree turns minor (Dm), a mix that borrows from the parallel minor. Learn it box by box, starting with the shape around the open string.

How the harmonic major scale is built:

The harmonic major scale is built from the degrees 1 2 3 4 5 b6 7, which gives the step pattern W-W-H-W-H-W+H-H (W = whole step, H = half step).

Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 2, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11. That makes it a 7-note scale.

It is the parent scale of its own modal family.
