Getting Started with G Major Pentatonic
G, A, B, D and E are the five notes of the G major pentatonic scale. The open G, B, D and high E strings all belong to it, so it is easy to hear the scale even before you fret anything.
The first box starts on the 3rd fret of the low E string. E minor pentatonic has identical notes, so one shape covers two keys. To keep the scale musical, practise it with practising scales in context.

Structure
G major pentatonic scale notes:
How the major pentatonic scale is built:
The major pentatonic scale is built from the degrees 1 2 3 5 6, which gives the step pattern W-W-W+H-W-W+H (W = whole step, H = half step).
Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 2, 4, 7, 9. That makes it a 5-note scale.
