Why it works
This eight-bar loop runs IV7 to #ivdim7 and up to I7 with the fifth in the bass, a chromatic rising bass line that repeats three times. The end of bar 6 and the last two bars switch to the ragtime chain VI7, II7, V7, I7 to close. It is a swing-era riff frame that builds excitement by repeating, and many bands wrote new heads on it.
