Ab Neapolitan: A Double-Flat Spelling

On paper the Ab Neapolitan scale looks forbidding: Ab, Bbb, Cb, Db, Eb, F and G. Bbb is a spelling of A, and Cb is B, but under your fingers nothing is unusual.

The root is on the 4th fret of the low E string and the 11th fret of the A string. If you think the notation gets in your way, the sharp version, G# Neapolitan, has the same sound.

How the neapolitan scale is built:

The neapolitan scale is built from the degrees 1 b2 b3 4 5 6 7, which gives the step pattern H-W-W-W-W-W-H (W = whole step, H = half step).

Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11. That makes it a 7-note scale.

It is also known as Neapolitan Major.
