A Augmented Scale on Guitar
The A augmented scale has six notes: A, C, C#, E, E# and G#. E# is the note you fret as F, so this is a theoretical spelling of a very playable scale.
The root is the open A string, and it appears again on the 5th fret of the low E string. A, C# and F augmented share exactly the same pitches, so one pattern covers three keys.

Structure
A augmented scale notes:
How the augmented scale is built:
The augmented scale is built from the degrees 1 b3 3 5 #5 7, which gives the step pattern W+H-H-W+H-H-W+H-H (W = whole step, H = half step).
Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 3, 4, 7, 8, 11. That makes it a 6-note scale.
