Playing D Bizantine with an Open Root
Play the open D string, then add D, Eb, F#, G, A, Bb and C#, and you hear the D Bizantine scale with a drone underneath. Eb is the flat second and Bb the flat sixth.
In the box shapes, D is on the 10th fret of the low E string and the 5th fret of the A string. The two augmented seconds, Eb to F# and Bb to C#, are the stretches to practise slowly. Afterwards, a tour of exotic scales gives more ideas.

Structure
D bizantine scale notes:
How the bizantine scale is built:
The bizantine scale is built from the degrees 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 7, which gives the step pattern H-W+H-H-W-H-W+H-H (W = whole step, H = half step).
Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11. That makes it a 7-note scale.
It is also known as Double Harmonic Major, Hijaz Kar and Byzantine.
