The C Bizantine Scale on Guitar

The C Bizantine scale, known as C double harmonic major, has the notes C, Db, E, F, G, Ab and B. Its formula is 1, b2, 3, 4, 5, b6, 7.

Two augmented seconds, Db to E and Ab to B, give it the classic sound of Middle Eastern melodies. The root lies on the 8th fret of the low E string and the 3rd fret of the A string. For neighbours in the same family, look through other exotic scales.

How the bizantine scale is built:

The bizantine scale is built from the degrees 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 7, which gives the step pattern H-W+H-H-W-H-W+H-H (W = whole step, H = half step).

Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11. That makes it a 7-note scale.

It is also known as Double Harmonic Major, Hijaz Kar and Byzantine.
