G Bizantine from the Open G String
G, Ab, B, C, D, Eb and F# are the notes of the G Bizantine scale. Open G, D and B are all part of it, so the open strings already outline the root, the fifth and the major third.
The root also sits on the 3rd fret of the low E string. Ab to B and Eb to F# are the two augmented seconds. For the same exotic flavour in other shapes, see the exotic scale overview.

Structure
G bizantine scale notes:
How the bizantine scale is built:
The bizantine scale is built from the degrees 1 b2 3 4 5 b6 7, which gives the step pattern H-W+H-H-W-H-W+H-H (W = whole step, H = half step).
Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 1, 4, 5, 7, 8, 11. That makes it a 7-note scale.
It is also known as Double Harmonic Major, Hijaz Kar and Byzantine.
