B Melodic Minor: Notes and the Open B String

B, C#, D, E, F#, G# and A# are the notes of the B melodic minor scale. The open B string rings the root, and G# and A# are the two raised notes that make the scale smoother than natural minor.

On the neck, the root appears on the 2nd fret of the A string and the 7th fret of the low E string. It is B major with a flat 3rd, so a major sound and a minor centre sit side by side. To use it over chord changes, read about choosing a scale for a given chord.

How the melodic minor scale is built:

The melodic minor scale is built from the degrees 1 2 b3 4 5 6 7, which gives the step pattern W-H-W-W-W-W-H (W = whole step, H = half step).

Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11. That makes it a 7-note scale.

It is the parent scale of its own modal family.

It is also known as Jazz Minor.
