The F Melodic Minor Scale Near the Nut

This F melodic minor scale reads F, G, Ab, Bb, C, D and E. It is F major with Ab in place of A, which is the whole difference between a bright sound and a dark one.

The root is on the 1st fret of the low E string and on the 8th fret of the A string. Both give a movable shape. The 5th degree makes a dominant chord, C7. Practise the pattern with the three notes per string exercise.

How the melodic minor scale is built:

The melodic minor scale is built from the degrees 1 2 b3 4 5 6 7, which gives the step pattern W-H-W-W-W-W-H (W = whole step, H = half step).

Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11. That makes it a 7-note scale.

It is the parent scale of its own modal family.

It is also known as Jazz Minor.
