Getting Started with G Melodic Minor

G, A, Bb, C, D, E and F# make up the G melodic minor scale. Start from G natural minor and raise the Eb to E and the F to F#, and the line becomes smooth enough to climb without an awkward jump.

The first box starts on the 3rd fret of the low E string, and the open G string supplies the root an octave higher. Jazz players know this sound as the jazz minor; for a jazz view of scales, see bebop scales.

How the melodic minor scale is built:

The melodic minor scale is built from the degrees 1 2 b3 4 5 6 7, which gives the step pattern W-H-W-W-W-W-H (W = whole step, H = half step).

Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11. That makes it a 7-note scale.

It is the parent scale of its own modal family.

It is also known as Jazz Minor.
