G Arabic from the Open G String

G, A, B, C, Db, Eb and F make up the G Arabic scale. The open G string is the tonic, and the open A and B strings are part of the scale as well.

On the low E string, the root is the 3rd fret. Db is the flat fifth and replaces the D that a major scale would have. Spend time on the step from C to Db, then learn about the wider exotic family.

How the arabic scale is built:

The arabic scale is built from the degrees 1 2 3 4 b5 b6 b7, which gives the step pattern W-W-H-H-W-W-W (W = whole step, H = half step).

Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10. That makes it a 7-note scale.

It is also known as Major Locrian.
