Getting Started with G Harmonic Minor

G, A, Bb, C, D, Eb and F# make up the G harmonic minor scale. Take G natural minor, raise the F to F#, and the sound turns more dramatic, with a leading tone that leads straight back to G.

The first box starts on the 3rd fret of the low E string, and the open G string gives the root an octave higher. On the 5th degree you get a major D chord. Pair this with hybrid scales if you want to blend it with other colours.

How the harmonic minor scale is built:

The harmonic minor scale is built from the degrees 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7, which gives the step pattern W-H-W-W-H-W+H-H (W = whole step, H = half step).

Counting in semitones from the root: 0, 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 11. That makes it a 7-note scale.

It is the parent scale of its own modal family.

It is also known as Aeolian Maj 7.
